A team of physicists is challenging the very limits of Heisenberg’s famous uncertainty principle by measuring quantum particles with unprecedented accuracy.

Physicists from The Univ. of Queensland have performed joint measurements on single light particles with accuracy never seen before, and developed methods that could help improve the most sensitive quantum sensors.

Martin Ringbauer, PhD student at UQ’s School of Mathematics and Physics and lead author of the experimental study, says the findings help answer long-standing open questions in quantum mechanics.

“The uncertainty principle is one of the central features of quantum mechanics, which has been misunderstood for the longest time,” Ringbauer says.
