Over at the Lifeboat Foundation there is a fascinating discussion going on between the members on what constitutes immortality, who should get the opportunity, and even whether this problem has already been solved.
My own view is that immortality, or at least extreme life extension, likely already exists but because it can only be given to a few is kept very secret. I also think it almost certain that, if there are immortals, some are in the Lifeboat Foundation because they would be the most concerned about being protected against a race-ending event. In other words, immortals would certainly take the long view. (The Lifeboat Foundations’ mission is to assure humans don’t become extinct).
